This paper demonstrates that the choice between alternative definitions of current account reversal suggested in the literature does matter for the identification of the frequency and dating of reversals. Using variables suggested by the solvency hypothesis three models of a random effect probity are estimated, and the results are compared to highlight the role of the statistical identification of “reversal” used in the exercise. Growth, exports, and changes in terms of trade, are significant, and have the expected signs. The results highlight both the critical role of trade variables in the genesis of reversals and that the choice of definition matters for the sign and significance of determinants.
Challenges for World Development: Letter from the Editors
The Revista de Economía y Estadística hosts in this volume selected papers from the VIII Arnoldshain Seminar held at the Universidade do Sao Paulo on March 2008, together with a contribution by Juan Carlos de Pablo. The Arnoldshain Seminars are named after the small town in the Taunus Mountains north of Frankfurt am Main where the first meeting in October 1995 took place. The organizer at that time, under the inspirationof Prof. Ulrich Ritter was the Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität, withthe rest of the participants coming from the Universidad Nacional de Córdoba, Argentina, and Universidade do Sao Paulo, Brasil
Economic activity and the terms of trade. Argentina, a case study
We address the influence of terms of trade (TOT) on GDP in Argentina using an 1810-2014 annual database. Eighteen multivariate VAR econometric models are estimated under diverse hypotheses for the relationship among economic activity, TOT, and a few control variables. We find for this particular case weak empirical evidence of a positive relationship between TOT and GDP levels; some evidence of a negative TOT volatility-GDP level relationship; and some evidence on the existence of a positive link between TOT growth volatility and GDP growth volatility. In general the relationships have the expected signs but are not statistically significant.

Ameliorate QSPR Study of Alkyl Hydroperoxides
A set of linear and nonlinear functions of one and several variables are determined to predict refractive index, molar refraction, and density for a representative set of alkyl hydroperoxides. Quite satisfactory predictions can be made on the basis of these equations and in some cases it is necessary to resort to higher-order equations to get a very good quantitative description of physical properties. Some possible further extensions of this study are pointed out in order to get a step head in the understanding of the quan- titative structure-property relationships of alkyl hydroperoxides.Facultad de Ciencias Exacta
Theoretical Study of the trans-3,6-Dimethoxy-1,2,4-trioxane Molecule
The molecule of trans-3,6-dimethoxy-1,2,4-trioxane has been studied by the semiempirical molecular orbital AM1 and PM3 methods. The numerical results of the structural study have been analyzed in terms of several stereoelectronic effects and compared with available experimental data. Theoretical predictions derived from both methods are in a good agreement with each other.Facultad de Ciencias Exacta
Ritter Reaction on Terpenoids, I Stereospecific Preparation of (1S,5R,8R) and (1R,5S,8S) 8-Acetamido-2,4,4,8-tetramethyl-3-aza-bicyclo[3.3.1]non-2-ene Perchlorate
Treament of ( + )lim onene with diluted perchloric acid in acetonitrile solution afforded (1S, 5R, 8R) 8-acetam ido-2,4,4.8-tetram ethyl-3-aza-bicyclo[3.3.1]non-2-ene perchlorate while the same reaction on ( — )β-pinene produced the (1S, 5R, 8R) enantiom er, and terpinolene gave the racemic mixture. The structure o f the product is proposed on basis of its physical and spectroscopic (IR , ¹H and ¹³C NMR, MS) properties and its formation involves a Ritter reaction between the monoterpene and acetonitrile.
